Talk about increasing youth HIV/AIDS awareness. Fans of the popular DC Comic, Green Arrow, are likely to recognize Mia, the runaway character whose been in Green Arrow's custody for nearly two years now. But title writer Judd Winick recently told the Associated Press that readers will learn something very new and slightly jarring about the character.
Mia is HIV positive.
Winnick, who some may recognize from the cast of 1993's Real World San Francisco, has made HIV/AIDS awareness one of his personal causes after having watched several friends battle the illness. He believes writing HIV into Mia's character will inspire readers to espouse the cause or, at the least, familiarize them with the steps to identifying and coping with HIV.
To ensure that Mia's will not be a fleeting storyline, writers are also allowing her to finally fulfill a dream: becoming Green Arrow's sidekick. She's eventually slated to join the Teen Titans as "Speedy."
